Introduction
Save the Children works in over 120 countries to create a better world for children. Save the Children UK began working in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1994 when the conflict started in the East of the country. The Democratic Republic of Congo is acknowledged to be one of the most difficult countries in which to grow up. Access to essential services is very limited and children are subject to widespread exploitation and abuse, including recruitment into armed groups, forced labour, sexual abuse and abandonment. Save the Children UK operates in the East (North Kivu and Ituri) and West (Kinshasa and Kasai Oriental) of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The eastern programme is mainly rural and conflict-related, the western work is urban and development oriented. The main unifying theme is child protection.
In addition, the Democratic Republic of Congo programme makes an important contribution to the Save the Children’s global programme and campaign on education in conflict ‘Rewrite the Future’ and on Child Survival ‘Every One’.
