VACANCY – SENIOR PROGRAM OFFICER, FORESTRY AND CLIMATE CHANGE

AWF has an excellent career opportunityfor a high performing candidate to carry out the responsibilities of a Senior Program Officer, Forestry and Climate Change. The successful candidate willbe responsible for providing technical assistance and climate change coordination to AWF’s program in Democratic Republic of Congo. This position will report to the Congo Landscape Director and be based in Kinshasa with travel within the landscape and occasional travel to AWF HQ.
Responsibilities
- Support the Director in managing and liaising with government, partners and donors in the successful delivery of the climate change component of the CAFEC grant.
- Support AWF’s current and anticipated work with the local communities to implement a REDD+ program and ensure forest based climate adaption projects are successfully managed in its Congo Landscape.
- Ensure the implementation and reporting of AWF work under Strengthening Central Africa Environmental Management and Policy Support (SCAEMPSproject.
- The SPO FCC will be AWF’s Central African’ representative to work with the technical teams implementing key projects that relate to work with forests, and climate change issues, projects, and programs.
- Together with the AWF Technical Director of Climate Change Strategy, provide AWF Congo team with technical leadership and assistance, strategic planning and program management, expert policy and technical advice, collaboration with other projects within the Congo region, particularly field missions and other offices, and dissemination of relevant information within AWF and its partners.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Have at least a Master’s degree in Forestry, Climate Change, Natural Resource Management or other revenant field with demonstrated experience in forestry and climate change. Have experience integrating the ecological, economic, and social aspects of forest, biodiversity, and climate change management programs in tropical forest environments is required, as is expertise in forest conservation, forest-related aspects of global climate change, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.Have an understanding of the role of foreign aid in promoting the sustainable use of forest resources, mitigating and adapting to climate change, and balancing economic development needs with conservation objectives is critical.
- Have demonstrated experience in climate change and the conservation of tropical forests in developing countries, in Africa.
- Have demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and as a member of a team, with a wide variety of individuals, groups, environmental institutions, and technical organizations. Have the ability to work effectively under pressure to carry out specific, results-oriented given constraints in time, information, and logistical support.
- Have excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate forestry issues, both in writing and orally. Ability to develop both technical and general audience materials to inform or advocate is highly desirable. Ability to communicate in both English and French is essential.
