The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa is seeking an individual for the position of Translator/Interpreter/ Grants Manager in the Executive Office.
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
Serve as an English and French translator and interpreter for the Mission; serve as a small grants manager; and serve as a backup for the Protocol Assistant. The position provides normal English and French translation services for the Mission and serves as interpreter for visitors and visiting delegations. The position solicits, collects, evaluates and presents proposals to supervisors for a variety of occasional small grants (focused on refugees, human rights, civil society and related topics). The position also provides protocol guidance to the Mission and protocol liason with the host government and local entities.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- A university degree in liberal arts, English philology, or closely related field is required.
- Five years experience as translator/interpreter and in translation and interpretation techniques is required. Working in management of moderately-sized grants for at least two years is also required.
- Fluency in English and French is required (this will be tested). Good working knowledge in Lingala is also required.
- Must have thorough knowledge of the host country’s social mores, political and social structure, institutions, political parties, historical development, and key political figures. A good working knowledge of the Department of State protocol instructions and related procedures is required.
- Must be able to familiarize him/herself with various subject matters so as to render accurate, clear translations which capture all of the meanings and intent of the original document.
- Typing level III (60words per minute) (this will be tested).
- Good secretarial/administrative skills; Computer skills: Word, Windows, Power Point, Excel.
