The Organization
Search for Common Ground (SFCG) is an international non-profit organization that promotes peaceful resolution of conflict. With headquarters in Washington, DC, SFCG’s mission is to transform how individuals, organizations, and governments deal with conflict – away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions. SFCG seeks to help conflicting parties understand their differences and act on their commonalities. With a total of approximately 380 staff worldwide, SFCG implements projects from 56 offices in 34 countries, including in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.
Search for Common Ground in DRC was established in 2001. SFCG runs a multi-pronged project in the DRC aimed at contributing to durable peace and the use of conflict transformation approaches throughout society. SFCG in DRC has approximately 100 staff located in offices in Kinshasa, Bukavu, Goma, Dongo and Kalemie and collaborates with partners in all provinces. SFCG uses a range of tools to implement conflict transformation and peacebuilding, including radio, television, participatory theatre, mobile cinema, comic books, joint action projects, training, public forums, and arts and culture events, among others. It works on issues including good governance, repatriation and reintegration of returnees, security sector reform, media training and professionalization, sexual and gender based violence as well as regional cohesion.
Programme
SFCG launched its activities in the DRC in 2001. With its main office in Kinshasa, SFCG works with partners in all provinces of the country, and has offices in Goma, Bukavu, Dongo, and Kalemie. Media is a primary tool utilized by all the programs—radio, video, print, and drama. Each program is adapted to the specific local context and conflict, and all apply tools from SFCG’s toolbox. SFCG also support radio and TV stations by providing them equipment for daily use as well as training on conflict sensitive journalism, professional journalism and media radio management for long-term sustainability.
Summary of Position:
SFCG is seeking an expert in Media and communication for behavior change to manage the multi-provincial Media department of about 20 staff and other media consultants and approximately 80 radio station partners. The position holder will be responsible for all aspects of programmatic, financial and administrative coordination of the media productions and training in all the projects.
The Media Coordinator will report to the DRC Program Director. The working languages for this position are French and English.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 Provide technical leadership and oversight to Media work and staff, as well as to local TV and radio stations partners
 Ensure the media productions are delivered on time and with high quality, while empowering media partners and enhancing national ownership for longer-term sustainability
 Verify and analyze work-plans, progress reports, final reports and other data for clarity, consistency and completeness
 Ensure SFCG’s Media activities and productions are conflict and gender sensitive
 Represent SFCG to partners, donors, and local and international organizations working in the Media sector
 Support monitoring and evaluation work in collaboration with SFCG’s Design, Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator
 Ensure SFCG has a key role in reinforcing media organizations at provincial, national and regional levels
 Support the visibility of the program and its results
 In accordance with SFCG advocacy policy, advocate for search of common ground solutions to various conflicts related to media or media professionals
 Keep the Country Director informed about all programmatic issues of relevance to the overall management and coordination of the Country Program
 Contribute creative ideas for program development and develop technical and financial proposals to local and international donors to sustain the ongoing program on media sector
 Provide content material to the Africa Team and Headquarters for updating the website, as well as for quarterly program updates, newsletters, social network and other SFCG literature
 Monitor and update SFCG’s Media strategy on a regular basis
 Support the strategy and mission of SFCG in DRC, the region, and globally.
As job descriptions cannot be exhaustive, the position holder may be required to undertake other duties that are broadly in line with the above key duties.
Minimum skills and experience:  At least seven (7) years of work experience in Media, experience in media for conflict resolution, peace-building highly desirable  International development, human rights, or media.
 At least five (5) years’ experience managing related programs, preferably in Africa
 Bachelor’s Degree in a related area
 Strong interest in conflict transformation, peace-building and SFCG’s mission
 Experience in working in an unstable environment
 Excellent coordination, communication and networking skills
 Strong report writing, fundraising and proposal writing skills.
 Cross-cultural experience and sensitivity, and experience living and working in developing countries
 Ability to work with people at all levels, ranging from high-level officials to community leaders
 Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
 Professional-level competency in French and English, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of Swahili, Lingala and any other local language is a plus
 Strong ability to multi-task and work independently
 Ability to multi-task and manage time well, including ability to manage continuous updates as well as major projects
 Ability to work to strict deadlines, and coordinate and compile information from various sources
 Willingness to regularly travel on short notice around the country
 Excellent attention to detail, well-organized and ability to engage in creative problem-solving
 Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team with employees throughout the organization
